It was built near the source by the Athénée de Vaucluse in honour of Pétrarque on July 20th 1804 where it stood for 25 years before it was moved to the public square.
The inauguration on its new site on November 29th 1829 coincided with the Duchesse de Berry’s visit to Vaucluse. It bore the inscription:
