The natural energy of the Sorgue’s running water brought several industries to the area. The town had up to 66 wheels installed on its canals. Mills were first mentioned in 12th century texts, probably to grind wheat grains. But the following century the draper industry was mentioned then at the end of the papal period, paper mills then silk factories appeared.

The Sorgue’s water has long been the driving force behind many factories. In the 13th century, blankets made in Isle were highly popular. These blankets were used to cover the bed, the equivalent of our duvets nowadays.

The last family company (Brun De Vian Tiran) has been working in Isle sur la Sorgue since 1808 spinning and weaving sheets, plaid covers, stoles and shawls made using raw fibres from all over the world: merino, mohair, alpaca, llama, camel, cashmere, silk, yak and particularly Mérinos d’Arles Antique, a local breed whose wool is the finest in Europe and exclusive to Brun De Vian Tiran.
