84800 L' Isle-sur-la-Sorgue
The Sorgue has starring role in local life and history. Fishing, wheat, wool and silk: the town of Isle sur la Sorgue has always been intrinsically bound to the river if only for its trade.
This intimate relationship is still as powerful today. Along the banks, the town’s true heritage is in the water and the history that runs through it. The fishing village grew and became a small town: Saint-Laurent, now the old town.
In the 11th century the town was called Insula then l'Isle-de-Venise or L'Isle-en-Venayssin in French.
Water was the root of prosperity for the town, its workshops and its factories which also benefitted from the powerful current. The town also managed to enjoy the water with the fishing trade. And we’re still having fun on the Sorgue: river jousting, canoeing, Nego-Chin trips, parades etc.
